Digital Transformation: What Is It and What Is the Key to Success?

There's a lot of talk about digital transformation in business, and many of us think this means implementing technological and digital tools in our companies, and that with this, we're ready to "crush it" in our operations. But what happens if they are not well received by our employees? Is it enough to just say there will be a change? What is it really, and what should I do then?

Digital transformation is the integration of technology into all areas of a company to change the way it operates and provide greater value to its customers, both internal and external. But there’s a key factor here: the cultural shift that must be managed for this transformation to succeed. This challenges the Status Quo and requires companies to constantly experiment and become comfortable with failure, which will happen, but can be mitigated by viewing it as an ongoing, living experience.

This digital transformation involves an internal audit in which processes, products, and strategies within the company are reassessed to fully leverage technology. That said, it drives organizations to reflect on their strengths, and weaknesses, to reinvent more than one of their areas, examining their interactions with customers, employees, from operations to top management.

What is the goal of digital transformation? Simple. To improve the lives of employees and customers, all while making an investment that yields a higher return in the medium term, generating more business, transactions, and greater profitability. Why? To continue investing in improvements and keep growing as a company.

The key? People. People will always be the key for digital transformation to lead us to success. I mentioned this at the beginning of this space, where it’s not enough to have the best or the most expensive technology. If we don't have our employees committed to our vision of improvement and wanting to continue offering the best to our customers, it's highly unlikely that our technological changes will be successful, and what could have been an investment turns into a pure expense, which can lead to a collapse in our financial line that won’t be easily recovered.

In short, there needs to be a mindset shift within everyone in the organization for digital transformation to have a smooth transition and not cause stress among our employees. Remember, there will always be barriers, but if it’s done alongside a trained team that is the ideal partner to achieve this goal, I’m confident it will be successful.
